Manhunter analysis - part 75: Lloyd Bowman is deceiving Graham

CATEGORY: MOVIES     [Hidden plot related]

Recall from earlier in the analysis that Francis Dollarhyde represents Ares, the Greed god of war. The Roman 'equivalent' of Ares was the god Mars. The planet Mars, which is named after the god Mars, is normally symbolized by the color red.

Above left and right: Will Graham, Jack Crawford, and Lloyd Bowman look at an illumination of a section of the tissue note in Bowman's work area. As Bowman states, the felt pen used by Lecktor to scratch out the section of the note which was eventually cut out (Bowman speaks as if he thinks this section of the note was torn out), when placed under infrared light, is transparent (due to the aniline dyes used in these pens), whereas the Tooth Fairy's ballpoint pen is not. The red color in Bowman's work area associates him with Dollarhyde, i.e., Bowman is working with Dollarhyde to at least some degree. In this particular scene, Bowman and Crawford are working together to deceive Will: Crawford mentions that the three crosses in the top part of the note, near where the note was torn (Like Bowman, Crawford speaks as if he doesn't know that Lecktor actually cut the note, with scissors), each looks like the top of a letter 'T'; then Bowman says the fourth visible mark looks like the top of an 'R'. Crawford then points out that there are three T's and an R in "Tattler", leading Graham to deduce that Dollarhyde wants Lecktor to respond to the note through The National Tattler (in the personals section). The point is that they want Graham to reach this particular conclusion. One implication of this is that they know Lecktor wrote the top part of the note, i.e., they know he was supposed to use the word 'Tattler' in it and then cut across this word with his scissors (making it look like it has been torn).

The outcome of the above is that Bowman and Crawford are both working with Dollarhyde (and Jimmy Price) to some degree. However, since the color red is also associated with Hell (in addition to Mars), and since Lecktor is a personification of Satan, what is ultimately the case is that Crawford and Bowman are actually working for Lecktor, and are only pretending to be working on Dollarhyde's side (i.e., they are giving Francis the appearance that they are doing so), so that they can get inside information on Dollarhyde and his activities that might help Lecktor. That the two men are ultimately in league with Lecktor, is indicated by the fact that Bowman says "Christ" at one point during the investigators' meeting, and shortly after this (also at the meeting), Crawford himself says, "Christ" - these are both indications that they're working with Lecktor to help make Will think he can become Christ, and thus, to prevent the second coming. As stated in part 74, although Jimmy Price is tied in with Lecktor to the extent, that he is helping Lecktor prevent the second coming of Christ, ultimately, Price is working for Dollarhyde.
